Per a network press release, Chicago PD returns to NBC on Wednesday, September 22 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, keeping its same time slot that the show has occupied for years now. NBC will continue to air all three of the One Chicago series on Wednesday nights.
When season 9 kicks off it will have to give a clear answer about the fate of Kim Burgess, played by original cast member Marina Squerciati. The season 8 finale saw Burgess rescued from her kidnappers but still in a hospital bed, causing fans to wonder if Squerciati would leave the series (similar to how Chicago Fire‘s Yuri Sardarov was written out, with his character Otis getting out of a fire only to succumb to his injuries at the hospital).
There’s been no announcement yet about Squerciati’s future with the show, although if she is leaving, that may not be made public until after the premiere so as to avoid spoiling the episode.
Elsewhere, Chicago PD fans will also be looking to see if Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) are engaged, as Upton proposed marriage to her partner/boyfriend at the end of season 8. The Upstead relationship took several big steps forward throughout the season and an engagement would be something that audiences haven’t seen on PD in several seasons.
With two significant unanswered questions, one of which involves a character’s possible death, the show will certainly have a massive first episode back.
