Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres on Starz

The second Power spinoff, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, premieres on Starz (tonight at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT) and is the first prequel in the crime drama franchise.

As the title indicates, the series focuses on the early years of the character Kanan, who was played on Power by producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. In Raising Kanan, he’s a young man portrayed by Mekai Curtis who’s still growing up in South Jamaica, Queens.

The series shows how he got into the drug trade; his mother, Raquel (as played by Patina Miller) is a dealer. The cast also includes Omar Epps (House) and Annalynne McCord (90210).

Starz is so bullish on this prequel that it’s already been renewed for a second season, ensuring that audiences will continue to see how Kanan Stark goes from 15-year-old upstart to major player in the New York criminal underworld.

If you’re not a Starz subscriber through your cable provider, there are ways to watch Power Book III: Raising Kanan online. Starz is now offering a free trial here to allow fans to check out the show, or you can sign up through Amazon Channels (which also allows for a 7-day free trial).

Either way you’ll get access to tonight’s series premiere plus have time to watch the original series and Power Book II: Ghost if you haven’t seen that spinoff yet. Meanwhile a third spinoff, Power Book IV: Force, recently underwent a major behind-the-scenes change as it films its first season.
