Weber was a recurring cast member in Chicago Med season 6 as Dr. Dean Archer, whom Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) brought on to help him run the Emergency Department. Archer was promoted to department head in the season finale after Choi was shot, confirming that Weber would return for at least one episode; now he’ll be a permanent part of the show.
In addition, the NBC series made the expected move to add two new series regulars to replace DeVitto and DaCosta—however, both of the new characters are doctors.
Kristen Hager (Condor) will play Dr. Stevie Hammer, a new ED doctor described as “brilliant and scrappy” in the original report by Deadline.
Guy Lockard (an NBC veteran with previous roles on The Blacklist and The Village) is set as Dr. Dylan Scott, who was formerly a Chicago police officer before deciding to become a doctor—reminiscent of Jeff Clarke (played by Jeff Hephner), who was a firefighter on Chicago Fire before being re-introduced as a medical student on Chicago Med.
Unlike Clarke, it’s not clear if the Scott character will have some connection to another part of the One Chicago universe.
It’s also not known yet if the show will introduce yet another new character who’s a nurse, since these castings don’t address the fact that the only regular nurse on the show right now is Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett). But if another nurse is introduced, it would probably have to be as a recurring character.
That’s because with Wednesday’s news Chicago Med has added three new main cast members to replace the two who elected to leave last season. Tee, S. Epatha Merkerson, Oliver Platt, Dominic Rains, Nick Gehlfuss and Barrett are all returning for season 7, meaning that the show now has nine series regulars. That’s a pretty big ensemble to showcase every week, and will keep the hospital busy as ever as the show continues heading toward 200 episodes.
Chicago Med airs Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC; new episodes return Sept. 22.
