Mindhunter alum Anna Torv has been cast in The Last of Us, HBO‘s adaptation of the popular Naughty Dog/Sony video game.
Torv will play Tess, the character portrayed by 24 actress Annie Wersching in the game. Tess is the smuggling partner of main hero Joel (to be played by The Mandalorian‘s Pedro Pascal). In a post-apocalyptic world, Tess and Joel accept a mission to smuggle Ellie to the Capitol building, but Tess is infected during the journey and she sacrifices herself to allow Joel and Ellie to escape.
It’s unknown if the TV adaptation will follow the exact same plot of the game, so Tess’s story could change, but it’s a high-profile role for Torv and her first American TV project since Mindhunter ended in 2019.
The actress received critical acclaim for her role as Dr. Wendy Carr, who joins forces with FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench (Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany) in the early days of the Behavioral Science Unit. Though there have recently been rumors that Mindhunter season 3 is still a possibility, none of those rumors have been proven and the cast was released from their contracts after season 2.
Still, to see Anna Torv go from hunting serial killers to fighting infected humans and monsters will be a surprisingly fun change of pace for crime drama fans. And for those who remember her breakout role as FBI agent Olivia Dunham on FOX’s long-running science fiction series Fringe, it probably feels like a homecoming.
The Last of Us is in production now and a premiere date has yet to be announced.
