The season focuses on President Bill Clinton’s (played by Clive Owen) impeachment trial through the perspectives of the three women at the center of the scandal: Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein), Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson), and Paula Jones (Annaleigh Ashford).
It’s Ryan Murphy’s long-awaited follow-up to The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, which earned Glee veteran Darren Criss an Emmy Award for his portrayal of serial killer Andrew Cunanan in 2018. The first season, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, premiered in 2016 with Paulson starring as embattled L.A. County prosecutor Marcia Clark and also winning an Emmy.
Like the O.J. Simpson season, Impeachment is also based on a book by CNN contributor Jeffrey Toobin; this time it’s A Vast Conspiracy, his 2012 account of the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. What’s interesting about this season is that Lewinsky is one of the producers, not just one of the subjects.
The American Crime Story season 3 teaser follows Lewinsky from behind, so audiences don’t get to see Feldstein’s face or Clive Owen’s take on Bill Clinton just yet. But that’s very common with FX teasers, which tend to be very vague; audiences can expect a full-length trailer for the season to drop closer to the premiere date.
