Dexter: New Blood trailer reveals Dexter’s new life

Dexter Morgan is back in Showtime‘s Dexter: New Blood trailer, which unfolds pretty much as Dexter fans would expect ahead of the revival’s September 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT premiere.

The trailer follows the expected path of showing crime drama fans the great new life that Dexter has made for himself since disappearing a decade earlier in the controversial Dexter finale. He’s living in the quaint town of Iron Lake, New York under the assumed name of James Lindsay (a nice nod to Jeff Lindsay, who created the character in his book series).

He’s got a steady job at a sporting goods store and a passionate love affair with Angela Bishop (played by Julia Jones, The Mandalorian). But when Dexter comes to visit Angela and sees that several people are missing in the area, the mystery brings his old instincts back to the surface. Will he be able to stop the killer before too many people get murdered? And will doing so cost him everything he’s built?

The biggest takeaways from the trailer are two things that longtime fans probably expected, one of which was revealed already. Jennifer Carpenter will be returning as Debra Morgan, replacing James Remar as the manifestation of Dexter’s “Dark Passenger” (since Debra died in the original series finale).

Viewers will also meet an older version of Dexter’s son Harrison, who’s now a young adult. The two haven’t seen each other in those ten years, so there’s going to be a lot for them to unpack. If Harrison doesn’t get caught up in or killed as a result of his father’s return to old habits, that is.

Given how much the series finale divided fans, the Dexter revival is one of those rare returns that actually makes sense. It has the chance to undo things that ticked off audiences before, or at least give them better closure than they had. We’ll find out in November if it was worth the wait.
